Happy Valley Middle School

Summary:

Happy Valley Middle School is a public middle school in Elizabethton, Tennessee, serving 369 students in grades 5-8 and part of the Elizabethton school district. This school stands out for its consistent academic improvement, strong performance among Hispanic and low-income students, and favorable student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools.

Happy Valley Middle School has steadily climbed the statewide rankings, moving from 334 out of 576 Tennessee middle schools in 2020-2021 to 156 out of 580 in 2023-2024, earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's Hispanic and low-income student subgroups perform particularly well, ranking 61 out of 281 and 22 out of 502 Tennessee middle schools, respectively, in 2023-2024. With a student-teacher ratio of 18.4, Happy Valley Middle School has a lower ratio than many surrounding schools like Sullivan Heights Middle School and Sullivan East Middle School.

While Happy Valley Middle School has a higher percentage of white students (88.89%) compared to the more diverse student populations of nearby schools, it outperforms many of them in academic metrics. The school's relatively high per-student spending of $9,904 in 2020-2021 and low student-teacher ratio may be contributing factors to its strong performance, particularly among its low-income students. However, the school could still improve in English Language Arts, especially in the upper grades, an area identified as a potential focus for further progress.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote At least one of your teachers is a closet racist but I'm guessing you already know that.
Shameful to have someone like that teaching children. Just shameful. Close Quote

Open Quote I give this school a ZERO stars rating. My child attended this school in the Fifth grade and I was very pleased. However, starting in Sixth grade there is NO communication between the teachers and parents. My child had some grade problems and I had no clue until the first report card. I was told that they were trying to "teach my child responsibility". My child continues to have issues in the class and I have yet to recieve a phone call, email, written letter or other form of communication despite her having every number to reah me, my email address and my home address. This school does not care whether the children succeed until it comes TCAP time then they stress how important it is for them to "do well on this test". I will be trying very hard to get my child into another school at the end of this year. If your child does not attend this school, please do not waste a good mind on this school as you will teach them more at home than they will EVER learn here. (this is only one of the issues I have with this school. Most of the issues aren't even appropriate to type up!) Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
