Snowden Elementary/Middle

Summary:

Snowden Elementary/Middle is a public school in Memphis, Tennessee that serves grades PK-8 and is part of the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district. With a diverse student population, Snowden faces significant academic challenges, with test scores and statewide rankings that lag behind state and district averages.

Snowden's academic performance, as measured by TNReady test scores, is well below state and district levels across all subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 23.4% of Snowden students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 39.7% statewide and 20% for the Memphis-Shelby County district. Snowden's statewide ranking has also declined over the years, from 520 out of 985 Tennessee elementary schools in 2018-2019 to 675 out of 1008 in 2023-2024. The school's performance varies significantly by student subgroup, with White students consistently outperforming their African American and Hispanic peers.

While Snowden faces academic challenges, the school does provide some effective support for its special education and gifted and talented students. However, its academic performance is generally lower than that of nearby schools, such as Idlewild Elementary and Springdale Elementary, which have higher test scores and statewide rankings. Continued investment and targeted interventions may be necessary to improve Snowden's academic performance and outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Our Rotary Club, Midtown Rotary, has sponsored a "Laws of Life' essay contest at Snowden for the past four years. The teachers and principal have been really helpful to us as community volunteers. We have also volunteered at Snowden as readers and tutors, and for other special events. We also built a monarch butterfly garden there. We have really enjoyed the atmosphere of helpfulness, curiosity and learning at Snowden. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
