Oakhaven Elementary

Summary:

Oakhaven Elementary is a public elementary school in Memphis, Tennessee, serving 538 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district, which is ranked 134 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Oakhaven Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (77.14%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 30.78% to 97.21% African American. The school consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Tennessee elementary schools, with low performance on state assessments across all grade levels and subject areas, particularly for its African American and Hispanic student subgroups. However, the school's English Language Learner (ELL) students perform exceptionally well, ranking in the top 5% of Tennessee elementary schools. Despite spending between $10,344 and $11,170 per student, which is higher than some nearby schools, Oakhaven Elementary's academic performance remains significantly lower than district and state averages.

While Oakhaven Elementary's performance is concerning, the data suggests there are opportunities for improvement. Nearby schools, such as Freedom Prep Elementary - Millbranch and Gardenview Elementary, demonstrate higher academic achievement, particularly in mathematics and science, despite having similar student demographics. By closely examining the practices and strategies of these higher-performing schools and leveraging the strengths of its ELL program, Oakhaven Elementary may be able to develop and implement effective approaches to support the academic growth of all its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school has incompetent teachers and administrators. I witnessed reading teachers unable to read the word united, Missouri Compromise, as well as a lack of general knowledge. The social studies teacher did not know who Winston Churchill was. Every day the principal would say see you on tomorrow. No clue that a preposition is not needed. I continually saw a lack of caring and bullying behavior by the PLC Coach. The school is an awful place to be and the admin team tries to intimidate instead of model lessons or get involved. The sad part is I seriously doubt the PLC Coach has any business teaching anything. That probably explains her poor attitude and her desire to intimidate others. They all need to learn how to smile and say have a great day. I am blessed to be out of there and at a school that thrives. Our administration goes out of their way to be kind to everyone. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
