Fort Mill Elementary

Summary:

Fort Mill Elementary is a public elementary school serving 774 students in grades PK-5 in the York 04 school district in South Carolina. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is predominantly White (59.17%), followed by African American (15.5%), Hispanic (10.47%), and Asian (7.62%) students.

Fort Mill Elementary is a high-performing school, consistently ranking among the top elementary schools in South Carolina over the past 10 years. The school's students perform significantly better than the state and district averages on state assessments, particularly in English Language Arts and Science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 67.3% of 3rd graders, 61.3% of 4th graders, and 67.7% of 5th graders at Fort Mill Elementary were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the state averages of 53.8%, 57.2%, and 55.7%, respectively. The school's performance for students with disabilities and gifted and talented students is also noteworthy, with rankings in the top half of South Carolina elementary schools.

While Fort Mill Elementary's academic performance is generally stronger than the nearby Pleasant Knoll Elementary, Kings Town Elementary, and Gold Hill Elementary, the school's racial achievement gaps are a concern. The school's White and Asian students consistently outperform their African American and Hispanic peers on state assessments, a trend that is also observed at the district and state levels. This highlights the need for the school and district to address these disparities and ensure equitable educational opportunities for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child has been going to Fort Mill Elementary since Kindergarten and is now in the fourth grade. I am simply amazed by the school's leadership (Mrs. Helms) as well as the teachers. They are very nurturing while not being overly so. They REALLY care about the welfare of the children. I have NEVER had any communication issues and if I ever did have a concern, it was addressed right away. My daughter is on a 6th grade reading level and tested as being in the top 10% as far as scores for her age/grade group. And this is only in the first two weeks of school this year (2010). She has always tested lower in the beginning (as I'm sure most children do) - by the end of the school year it is amazing to see how much better she does (when she does well already!). We actually moved to Fort Mill, SC from California and chose Fort Mill specifically for their schools. We have not been disappointed. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
