E. P. Todd School

Summary:

E. P. Todd School is an elementary school located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 576 students, and is part of the Spartanburg 07 School District.

Despite having a relatively high per-student spending of $17,763, E. P. Todd School consistently underperforms compared to the Spartanburg 07 district and the state of South Carolina in both English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 42.1% of 3rd graders, 34.5% of 4th graders, and 41.5% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the district's 52.3%, 54.5%, and 52.1%, respectively. The school's performance in Mathematics is even lower, with only 30.7% of 3rd graders, 21.5% of 4th graders, and 40% of 5th graders being proficient or better, compared to the district's 52.4%, 48.3%, and 44.5%. This persistent low performance has resulted in the school consistently ranking in the bottom half of South Carolina elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade.

One of the key factors contributing to E. P. Todd School's underperformance is its significantly higher percentage of African American students (48.26%) compared to the surrounding schools, which tend to have a higher percentage of White students. The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as African American students, White students, and students of low socioeconomic status. This highlights the need to address systemic inequities and ensure that all students, regardless of their racial or socioeconomic background, have access to high-quality education. In contrast, nearby schools like Pine St. Elementary consistently rank among the top elementary schools in the state, suggesting that a comprehensive, data-driven approach is needed to address the underlying issues at E. P. Todd School.

Open Quote Poor administration will be the downfall for E P Todd School. The school has been in a downward spiral the last couple of years. Great teachers are leaving in mass. Parents of excellent students are using school choice to attend better schools in the district. The bad students are making it miserable for the remaining good students. The principal is beyond unapproachable and never seems to care what is really going on. She wants to LOOK LIKE she is doing something good. She does not have everyone fooled!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
