James H. Hendrix Elementary is a public elementary school in Boiling Springs, South Carolina, serving 694 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Spartanburg 02 school district, which is ranked 8th out of 75 districts in the state and has a 5-star rating.

James H. Hendrix Elementary has a relatively diverse student population, with 49.57% White, 19.88% African American, 6.2% Hispanic, and 4.03% Asian students. This diversity is higher compared to nearby schools like Oakland Elementary (81.63% White) and Boiling Springs Elementary (63.09% White). However, the school's academic performance is slightly below the district and state averages in both English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency. Interestingly, the school performs particularly well in supporting English Language Learners and Low Socioeconomic Status students, ranking in the top 25% of South Carolina elementary schools for these subgroups.

James H. Hendrix Elementary has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 66.52% to 88.62% over the past three years, which is significantly higher than nearby schools. The school's spending per student has also increased from $10,747 in 2019-2020 to $12,456 in 2022-2023, indicating a strong investment in resources. While the school's performance is generally on par with the district and state, its diverse student population and targeted support for underperforming subgroups suggest that it may be facing unique challenges that could be addressed through continued focus on targeted interventions and support.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Rank among the lowest elementary schools in all of Spartanburg. A dilapidated building that looks like it should be torn down. Depressing and probably not very healthy either. I have been told that most of the teachers at my school are there as punishment for low performance anddisciline issues at other schools in Spartanburg County. Nobody really wants to work at Hendrix but if you want a job you take it. I can't wait to move out of this crappy neighborhood and into a better district . Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
