Richland Northeast High is a public high school located in Columbia, South Carolina, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,359 students. The school is part of the Richland 02 school district, which is ranked 33 out of 75 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Richland Northeast High consistently underperforms the Richland 02 district and the state of South Carolina in end-of-course (EOC) exam proficiency rates across various subjects, including Algebra 1, English 1, U.S. History, and English 2. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rate in Algebra 1 was 45.85%, compared to 67.1% for the Richland 02 district and 72.5% for the state. The school's performance is particularly low in subjects like U.S. History, where the proficiency rate was only 32.94% in 2023-2024, compared to 56.45% for the district and 58.77% for the state. Additionally, Richland Northeast High's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American and Hispanic students performing much worse than their White counterparts.

Richland Northeast High has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 69.9% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. This is significantly higher than the district and state averages, which can contribute to the school's academic challenges. Interestingly, the school's academic performance is significantly lower than that of nearby Spring Valley High, which is also in the Richland 02 district, suggesting that factors beyond just district-level resources and policies may be contributing to the differences in academic achievement between these schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Teachers are great. Administration does not control the disruptive students. When a disruptive student gets sent to an administrator, the student gets a slap on the wrist and gets sent back to class. Gangs have significant influence. Good teachers and substitutes who try to teach the students get forced out of their jobs by the administration. I would not send my child to this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
