Welcome Elementary

Summary:

Welcome Elementary is a public elementary school in Greenville, South Carolina, serving 652 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Greenville 01 school district, which is ranked 14th out of 75 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Welcome Elementary stands out for its unique student population, with a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (52.3%) compared to surrounding schools, which range from 3.05% to 35.91% Hispanic students. However, the school's test scores in English Language Arts and Mathematics are consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of 5th-grade students proficient or better in ELA was 43.8% at Welcome Elementary, compared to 63.4% in the Greenville 01 district and 55.7% statewide. Additionally, Welcome Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of South Carolina elementary schools, with a ranking between 303 and 562 out of over 600 schools over the past 10 years.

Despite these challenges, Welcome Elementary has a relatively high per-student spending of $13,615 in the 2022-2023 school year, which is higher than the surrounding schools. The school also has a lower student-teacher ratio of 13.3, compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 10.4 to 18.1. However, the school's performance on test scores for specific student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students, is generally higher than its overall school performance. This suggests that Welcome Elementary may face unique challenges in terms of student learning, language barriers, and access to resources, which could be crucial to address for improving the school's overall performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went here since Kindergarten until 5th grade, and there's a lot people should know about this school.

Education wise, its pretty decent. The teachers do genuinely care about their student's success, and they will take as much time if their class seems to struggle.

And while the test scores prove otherwise, its because that its an incredibly toxic environment for kids to be in. Bullying is really out of hand, and really the only way to not get bullied is to be the biggest bully. As someone who's had to deal with the other classmates for 5 years, please, if you wish best for your kid, do NOT send them here. Your child will either become despised by other kids, or they take the dark route and become those kids that become toxic to others. Either way, it will mold your child in a way that will hurt and warp their future.

I really do hope things have and will get better there, but from my experience, I don't recommend this school at all. Find somewhere else. (I recommend Sara Collins) Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
