Greenwood Elementary

Summary:

Greenwood Elementary is a public elementary school in Florence, South Carolina, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Florence 01 district, which is ranked 27th out of 75 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Greenwood Elementary stands out for several key reasons. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (61.81%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 38.71% to 68.52% African American. However, the school consistently underperforms the district and state averages in both English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Greenwood Elementary's 3rd-grade proficiency rates were 39.5% in ELA and 37.2% in Math, while the district and state averages were significantly higher. This low performance has led to Greenwood Elementary ranking between 398th and 505th out of 622-644 South Carolina elementary schools over the past several years, placing it in the bottom 25% of schools in the state.

Greenwood Elementary's struggles are particularly pronounced for its African American, male, and low socioeconomic status student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 40-50% of South Carolina elementary schools for these groups. Despite spending significantly more per student ($12,802 in 2022-2023) compared to the state average, the school's academic outcomes remain well below the district and state averages. In comparison, nearby schools like Royall Elementary and Briggs Elementary are outperforming Greenwood Elementary in both ELA and Math proficiency.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love this school. When we transferred into Greenwood we were not sure because no one ever had anything good to say about the school. But once the kids started attending the school, we feel in love with the teachers and the staff. There is a new principal and she is making a world of difference. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
