Academic Magnet High

Summary:

Academic Magnet High is a highly-ranked public high school in North Charleston, South Carolina, serving grades 9-12 and part of the Charleston 01 school district. This exceptional school has consistently been one of the top-performing high schools in the state, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

What sets Academic Magnet High apart is its exceptional academic performance. The school's students consistently outperform the district and state averages on End-of-Course exams, with 100% proficiency rates in key subjects like Algebra 1, English 1, and U.S. History. This academic excellence is reflected in the school's top 1-3 rankings in South Carolina over the past several years. Notably, North Charleston High and Greg Mathis Charter High lag behind in test scores and rankings compared to Academic Magnet High.

While Allegro Charter School of Music and Charleston School of the Arts also perform at a high level, Academic Magnet High stands out for its exceptional and sustained academic performance. However, the school's racial makeup, with a significantly higher percentage of White and Asian students compared to the surrounding area, raises important questions about equity and access that the school and Charleston 01 district may need to address.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Over the top school! Ranked #10 in the nation according to US News and World Report. My daughter will be graduating in two weeks and has a solid high average IQ so she should be performing well, but she is performing well into the excellent range on everything! Over 1400 SAT score so she is a Palmetto Fellows Scholar. I have to give some credit to her because she has learned how to study and she has also applied herself. There were a few weekends that she studied for 20 hours straight but there were more weekends of 2 hours of homework and she was done. The thesis requirement is incredibly strenuous and most kids really wrestle with it, but in the end they get it done. There was a point when she was struggling with outside issues. I went in and talked to every one of her teachers and all were accommodating, helpful and empowering. I feel like she will have smooth sailing in college because she is so well prepared. I also feel like I have AMHS to thank for helping her to get where she is. Seeing your child have a bright future that they are excited about is an incredible feeling! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
