Cross Elementary

Summary:

Cross Elementary is a public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in Cross, South Carolina, with a student population of 348 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school's racial makeup is predominantly African American (66.09%), followed by White (22.99%), two or more races (6.61%), and Hispanic (4.31%).

Despite having the highest per-student spending ($16,927) among nearby schools and a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 16.4, Cross Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 25% of South Carolina elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics are significantly lower than the state and Berkeley 01 district averages across all grade levels. This is likely due to the school's 100% free and reduced-lunch rate, indicating that all students come from low-income households, a key differentiating factor compared to the nearby schools, such as Henry E. Bonner Elementary, St. Stephen Elementary, and Cane Bay Elementary, which have more diverse student populations and higher academic performance.

While Cross Elementary's overall performance is low, the school's African American students perform better than the school's overall performance, ranking in the top 50% of South Carolina elementary schools for this subgroup. This suggests that the school may be able to leverage its strengths in supporting African American students to improve the overall academic outcomes. Analyzing the practices and strategies employed by the nearby higher-performing schools could also provide valuable insights for improving Cross Elementary's educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
