Beaufort High has a diverse student population, with 42.23% White, 39.46% African American, and 10.41% Hispanic students. Beaufort High's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic and White students generally performing better than African American, low socioeconomic status, and disabled students. The school has a relatively high percentage of students (49.29% in 2022-2023) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a significant population of economically disadvantaged students.

Compared to nearby schools, Beaufort High's performance is generally lower than that of Bluffton High and Hilton Head Island High, which have higher rankings and better test scores. Interestingly, the nearby Whale Branch Early College High, with a predominantly African American student population (80.04%), outperforms Beaufort High in several areas, including Algebra 1/Mathematics and English 2 test scores. These disparities highlight the need for targeted interventions and additional resources to support all students, particularly those from underperforming subgroups, at Beaufort High.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We moved to SC from a high achieving district in Virginia. We did not know what to expect given that SC schools are typically rated much lower than VA schools. Our pleasant surprises began with Beaufort High's staff. My son's teachers were very responsive and typically returned emails and shared information when I asked. Several went above and beyond to help him with his transition to the new school and to help him be successful in his classes. Where we felt like just a number in Virginia, we feel a personal connection here, and it's because of the people in the school. There is a warmth and friendliness here, and the staff care about and recognize the students both for their academics and their character. Our first year at BHS was successful beyond our expectations, and we are so grateful to have chosen this school and community. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
