Mt. Lebanon Elementary

Summary:

Mt. Lebanon Elementary is a public elementary school located in Pendleton, South Carolina, serving grades PK-6 with a student population of 513. The school is part of the Anderson 04 school district, which is ranked 4 out of 75 districts in the state and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Mt. Lebanon Elementary consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in South Carolina, with students outperforming the state and district averages in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. In 2023-2024, 82.8% of 6th-grade students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 75.5% in the district and 53.7% statewide. The school also has a lower percentage of economically disadvantaged students (51.66%) and a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 15.7, which may contribute to its strong academic performance. However, the school's student population is significantly less diverse than the surrounding schools, with a higher percentage of White students (81.09%) and lower percentages of African American (7.99%) and Hispanic (5.65%) students.

While Mt. Lebanon Elementary's consistent high performance and effective support for economically disadvantaged students are impressive, the school's demographic makeup raises questions about its ability to address the needs of a more diverse student population. Nearby schools like Clemson Elementary, New Prospect Elementary, and Calhoun Academy of the Arts serve more diverse communities and may offer different perspectives and approaches to education that could benefit all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Two of my grandsons attend Mt. Lebanon. I am a certified volunteer, so I have spent time at the school, gone on field trips, and gotten to know several of the staff, teachers, andthe principal, Mr. Southard. He was the principal who launched Chastain Road Elementary in Pickens County a few years ago, and my friends who teach or work there praise him highly. Also the school itself is beautiful the halls are adorned with student art and reproductions of famous artwork. Inspirational sayings are found throughout, and it is a bright, clean space. I think my boys are getting a good education at Mt. Lebanon, and they enjoy going there. Everyone is very friendly and helpful----you won't be a stranger long at Mt. Lebanon! Close Quote

Open Quote I noticed the percentage for multiple race was 0%. My child is more than two races and that was disclosed in the enrollment forms. I have definitely seen children of mixed races at the school and they should be acknowleged. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
