Susquehanna Township Middle School

Summary:

Susquehanna Township Middle School is a public middle school serving 723 students in grades 6-8 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which is part of the Susquehanna Township School District. The school consistently ranks in the bottom half of Pennsylvania middle schools, with significantly below-average performance on standardized tests, particularly for certain student subgroups such as Asian, African American, and economically disadvantaged students.

Compared to nearby schools like Camp Hill Middle School, which is just 5.63 miles away and ranks in the top 15% of Pennsylvania middle schools, Susquehanna Township Middle School's academic performance is significantly lower. The school has also seen an increase in dropout rates, rising from 0.0% in 2020-2021 to 1.6% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average. Despite increased spending per student, from $13,153 in 2019-2020 to $18,377 in 2021-2022, the school's academic outcomes have not improved.

The challenges faced by Susquehanna Township Middle School, including its consistently low academic performance, achievement gaps for certain subgroups, and increasing dropout rates, suggest that the Susquehanna Township School District needs to implement comprehensive strategies to address these issues. Comparing the school to its higher-performing neighbors highlights the need for the district to closely examine its practices and seek evidence-based interventions and strategies to support student learning and success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This middle school is horrible, from bullying, fighting, picking on other children, to the administration. There is no respect for one another, and there is no discipline or supervision. I would NOT recommend this school to ANY child that would like to enjoy their youth years. The teacher try to make changes and help the children, however, the administration let the kids go without discipline for to long, it’s out of control. My child moved to Susquehanna two years again and starting the middle school in 6th grade. There has been nothing but trouble and problems from this school the entire two years of going there. It’s sad to see a school ran by teenage bullies. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
