Conwell Russell Middle School

Summary:

Conwell Russell Middle School is a public middle school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, serving 175 students in grades 5-8. The school is part of the Philadelphia City School District, which is ranked 494 out of 606 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Conwell Russell Middle School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (53.14%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 1.12% to 62.99% Hispanic. Academically, the school's performance on PSSA tests is generally lower than the district and state averages, with only 12.6% of students proficient or better in Math in 2022-2023, compared to 20.4% in the district and 39.3% statewide. While the school's African American students perform relatively well, ranking 20th out of 421 Pennsylvania middle schools, its Hispanic and low socioeconomic status students rank 142nd and 365th, respectively.

Despite Conwell Russell Middle School's higher per-student spending of $21,969 in 2021-2022, which is higher than nearby schools, this has not translated into significantly better academic outcomes. The school's dropout rate, ranging from 0.0% to 0.9% over the past few years, is lower than nearby schools. However, the data suggests that the school faces significant academic challenges, and there may be opportunities to leverage best practices from higher-performing nearby schools, such as Young Scholars Charter School, to improve outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Conwell is a really good dchool. They have a wonderful music program and is truly filed with diamonds in the rough. There are some disciplinary problems brought on by neighboring schools but i feel the school handles it very nicely.Given the area, there's not much Conwell can be blamed for.The school respects children's backgrounds and hopes to better them by graduation.I felt I was in a very comfortable and safe enviroment, you're not just a number there, and thats important. The teachers have time for the students and are open to students willing to approach them respecvtfully. At conwell I got alot of new experiences.New learning methods, new people, new cultures and I loved it.It opened many doors for me and helped me see the good in people and broke any stereotypes i had againnst the kensington area and people. Our graduation was lovely(2008). About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
