Robeson High School for Human Services

Summary:

Paul Robeson High School for Human Services is a public high school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, serving around 500 students in grades 9-12 in a predominantly low-income, African American community. Despite facing socioeconomic challenges, the school has shown impressive improvements in key metrics like graduation and dropout rates, outperforming many of its nearby counterparts.

One of the school's standout achievements is its steadily increasing four-year graduation rate, which reached an impressive 96% in the 2022-2023 school year. This is significantly higher than the graduation rates of nearby schools, which range from 61.3% to 87.8%. Additionally, Paul Robeson High School for Human Services has relatively low dropout rates, ranging from 0.9% to 2.8% over the past few years, lower than the 3.1% to 17.2% range of its neighboring schools. However, the school's academic performance in core subjects like Algebra I and Biology lags behind the district and state averages, with proficiency rates of 17.3% and 24%, respectively, in the 2022-2023 school year.

While Paul Robeson High School for Human Services outperforms many of the nearby traditional public schools, it struggles to match the academic achievements of some of the local charter schools, such as Boys Latin of Philadelphia Charter School and Freire Charter School. These charter schools tend to have higher test scores and better overall performance rankings compared to the traditional public schools in the area. Despite these challenges, Paul Robeson High School for Human Services remains a beacon of hope for its community, providing a quality education and supporting its students' success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school and the principal get a lot of credit for turning things around. It is easy to turn a school around when it is all fraud. The principal changes all of the students grades so that they pass. It's egregious, F's and D's to B's and A's. He also has classes that only exist on paper. Students are enrolled and given grades for classes they never attend. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
