Chicora Elementary School

Summary:

Chicora Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 455 students in grades K-6 in the Karns City Area School District in Chicora, Pennsylvania. Despite its relatively low student-teacher ratio, the school has consistently underperformed, ranking in the bottom half of Pennsylvania elementary schools.

Chicora Elementary lags behind state and district averages in academic proficiency across multiple subjects and grade levels. In 2023-2024, only 37.2% of Chicora students were proficient or better in PSSA Math, compared to 40.4% statewide and 32.4% for the Karns City district. The school also struggles with achievement gaps for certain student subgroups, with White students and low-income students performing particularly poorly. Interestingly, the nearby Sugarcreek Elementary School, also in the Karns City district, outperforms Chicora across multiple metrics.

Despite spending more per student ($14,123 in 2021-2022) than the state average, Chicora Elementary's academic performance has not improved. In fact, the school has seen a concerning decline in proficiency rates over the past few years, particularly in Math. In comparison, the Allegheny-Clarion Valley Elementary School, which is in a different district, outperforms Chicora Elementary across multiple academic measures, despite having a higher percentage of low-income students. Addressing these performance gaps should be a priority for the school and the Karns City Area School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
