Summary:

Pickering Valley Elementary School is a top-performing public elementary school in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Downingtown Area School District. The school consistently ranks among the best in the state, with exceptional academic achievement, a unique racial diversity, and a relatively low student-teacher ratio.

Pickering Valley Elementary School has a long history of outstanding academic performance, consistently outperforming the state and district averages in PSSA test scores across all grade levels and subject areas. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school's proficiency rates in PSSA Math, Science, and English Language Arts were significantly higher than the state and district averages, with some grades achieving proficiency rates above 90%. For example, in 5th grade PSSA Math, Pickering Valley Elementary School had a proficiency rate of 88.6%, compared to the Downingtown Area School District's 72.5% and the state's 42.7%.

One of the unique aspects of Pickering Valley Elementary School is its racial diversity, with a significantly higher percentage of Asian students (61.35%) compared to the state and district averages. This contrasts with the nearby West Vincent Elementary School, which also demonstrates strong academic performance but has a more balanced racial composition. Additionally, Pickering Valley Elementary School has a very low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (6.33%), indicating a relatively high socioeconomic status of the student population, which may contribute to the school's exceptional results. However, the school's success is not solely attributable to these factors, but rather a combination of quality instruction, resources, and community engagement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The Principle requires that all twins be separated and put in different classrooms. He doesn't even meet with the twins and get to know them, he just imposes a blanket rule covering all multiples. He said that they learn better when separated and that he had one bad experience with keeping twins together so all twins must be separated. I wish he got to know the students that he was separating before imposing his ruling. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
