Second District Elementary School

Summary:

Second District Elementary School is a public elementary school in Meadville, Pennsylvania, serving 329 students in grades K-6. The school is part of the Crawford Central School District, which is ranked 379 out of 606 school districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its relatively small class sizes, with a student-teacher ratio of around 12-13 students per teacher, Second District Elementary School consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of Pennsylvania elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. The school's proficiency rates in PSSA Math, Science, and English Language Arts are significantly lower than the state and district averages, indicating persistent academic struggles. This is likely due to the school's extremely high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with nearly 100% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Additionally, while the school has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, such as Conneaut Valley Elementary School and Maplewood Elementary School, the academic performance of its subgroups, such as White students and students with disabilities, is significantly lower than the state and district averages.

The consistent low performance and the presence of achievement gaps at Second District Elementary School indicate a need for a comprehensive and targeted approach to address these issues. The school's resource allocation, with its relatively low student-teacher ratio, has not translated into improved academic outcomes, suggesting the need for a re-evaluation of instructional strategies and support systems to better serve the unique needs of its student population, which is predominantly from disadvantaged backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We had our daughter assessed for kindergarten who missed registration by one day because of her birthdate. The guidance counselor had her in a room by herself for less than twenty minutes. She did not ask anything about her history and was unwilling to accept information from her doctor that stated that she was cognitively ready and would benefit from being with same age peers or those slightly older than her. I have two masters degrees in education. This is not how testing is to be conducted. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
