Paxtang Elementary School

Summary:

Paxtang Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 294 students in grades K-5 in the Central Dauphin School District in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The school faces significant challenges, as it consistently ranks in the bottom half of Pennsylvania elementary schools and has a very high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Paxtang Elementary's performance is consistently below the state and district averages in both math and English language arts (ELA) on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) exams. For example, in 2023-2024, only 36.7% of Paxtang students were proficient or better in math, compared to 40.4% statewide and 35.6% in the Central Dauphin School District. In ELA, only 44.3% of Paxtang students were proficient or better, compared to 53% statewide and 51.5% in the district. However, the school performs better in science, with 77.2% of students proficient or better in 2023-2024, compared to 65.8% statewide and 65.4% in the district.

When compared to other Central Dauphin elementary schools in the area, such as South Side Elementary, Tri-Community Elementary, and Phillips Elementary, Paxtang's performance is generally lower, even though these schools also serve high-poverty populations. However, Paxtang's performance is significantly better than schools in the neighboring Harrisburg City School District, which has an even higher poverty rate. Despite these comparisons, Paxtang Elementary's performance has declined over the past several years, suggesting the school may be facing increasing challenges in serving its high-needs student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
