Elroy Avenue Elementary School

Summary:

Elroy Avenue Elementary School is a public elementary school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Brentwood Borough School District. The school has seen a decline in racial diversity, with a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and its academic performance is generally lower than nearby schools.

Elroy Avenue Elementary School's overall PSSA proficiency rates in Math, Science, and English Language Arts (ELA) are lower than the state and district averages. While the school's Science proficiency rate is higher than the state and district, its Math and ELA proficiency rates lag behind. Notably, the school's white students and low socioeconomic status students perform significantly lower than the state averages for their respective groups. In comparison, the nearby Whitehall Elementary School outperforms Elroy Avenue in all subject areas, likely due to its lower percentage of low-income students.

Despite having a relatively high per-student spending and a low student-teacher ratio, Elroy Avenue Elementary School faces challenges in improving its academic performance. The school's leadership and the Brentwood Borough School District may need to explore targeted interventions and support to address the achievement gaps, particularly for the school's white and low-income students, and work to improve the overall educational outcomes for all students at Elroy Avenue Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son attended Kindergarten here for a couple of weeks while I worked things out with my hubby.

I just have to say that my son and I are so sad to leave and go back to Georgia.

The teachers, staff & administration were ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Hoover in Mt Lebanon and if given the choice, I would pick ELROY!!!!!

Their Kindergarten is all day long & academically structured...having a background in child development I thought perhaps this would be too much. It's not, ELROY has a GREAT program and works very well in helping EACH INDIVIDUAL CHILD adjust! Not only do they have Speech Therapist, but Occupational Therapist, as well as an assortment of paraprofessionals, aides & parent volunteers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
