Benjamin Rush Elementary School

Summary:

Benjamin Rush Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, serving 378 students in grades K-6. The school is part of the Bensalem Township School District, which is ranked 443 out of 610 school districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Benjamin Rush Elementary School consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Pennsylvania elementary schools, with significantly lower academic performance compared to state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 21% of students were proficient or better in Math, compared to 40.4% statewide and 26.2% in the Bensalem Township School District. The school's performance in Science is slightly better, with 60.5% of students proficient or better, but still lags behind the state and district averages. In English Language Arts, only 31.4% of students were proficient or better, compared to 53% statewide and 45.6% in the district.

The school's challenges may be partly attributed to its high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 76.19% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. In contrast, nearby Valley Elementary School and Belmont Hills Elementary School, which generally perform better academically, have lower percentages of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, ranging from 51.61% to 57.3% free or reduced-price lunch recipients. These findings suggest that addressing the unique needs of Benjamin Rush Elementary School's diverse and economically disadvantaged student population may be crucial to improving academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The curriculum is way behind where other students my daughter's age are. The guidance counselor seems completely disinterested in offering any help or solutions short of moving my child up a grade. I do not feel my child should need to be moved up a grade in order to receive the same education as other kids her age. Contacting the principal is our next step. Hoping she's more concerned than everyone else seems to be. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
