Mt Vernon Elementary School

Summary:

Mt Vernon Elementary School is a public elementary school in Springfield, Oregon, serving 412 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Springfield School District 19, which is ranked 93 out of 140 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its location in Springfield, Mt Vernon Elementary School consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages in standardized test scores for English Language Arts and Mathematics. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 3rd grade ELA proficiency rate was 20.8%, compared to the district's 30.5% and the state's 39%. The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 25% of Oregon elementary schools for both female and male students, as well as Hispanic and White students, in ELA and Math. With a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger and a ranking of 638 out of 710 Oregon elementary schools in the 2023-2024 school year, Mt Vernon Elementary School is clearly struggling to provide a high-quality education to its students.

When compared to nearby schools within the same district, the challenges at Mt Vernon Elementary School become even more apparent. For instance, Thurston Elementary School, located just 3.6 miles away, consistently outperforms Mt Vernon in both ELA and Math proficiency rates, with significantly higher rankings and a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. Additionally, the school's relatively high per-student spending of $21,610 in 2021-2022 suggests that resources may not be effectively utilized to improve student outcomes, and the high percentage of students from low-income families raises concerns about equity and access to quality education at Mt Vernon Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I think Mt Vernon is great. Daughter is rocking it in math and reading. She has had great teachers the past two years. But then again we spend time with her at home with these subject's for extra help. No complaints from me. You get what you put into it. Close Quote

Open Quote I was a student at this school: Mt. Vernon Elementary school.
I was able to make a lot of friends there, but I had a very little education level.
This school needs to whip these kids up and into shape and care more about the education of these children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
