Guy Lee Elementary School

Summary:

Guy Lee Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Springfield, Oregon, serving 347 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Springfield School District 19, which is ranked 93 out of 140 districts in Oregon and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Guy Lee Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Oregon elementary schools, with a ranking between 551 and 658 out of 695-710 schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on state assessments (OSAS) is significantly below the district and state averages in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science. For example, in 2023-2024, only 18% of 3rd graders, 17.8% of 4th graders, and 25.4% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the district's 30.5%, 35.3%, and 42.1%, respectively, and the state's 39%, 41.9%, and 46.9%. The school's student population is more diverse than the surrounding schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic students and a lower percentage of White students.

Despite the school's higher per-student spending and relatively low student-teacher ratio, it has not translated into improved academic outcomes. This suggests that the school may need to re-evaluate how it allocates and utilizes its resources to better support student learning and achievement. To address these issues, the school and district may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies that address the unique needs of its student population, while also ensuring that resources are being effectively utilized to support student learning and success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The staff seems overwhelmed and unwilling to even provide basic educational duties, let alone anything extra, despite additional funding with the most recent budget allocations for support staff and IDEA provisions and accommodations. They evidently don't have functioning clocks, or are unable to accurately tell time. I personally provided sensory deprivation tools like headphones.... the list is endless in regards to my perpetual disappointment with Guy Lee elementary. Close Quote

Open Quote I love Guy Lee Elementary! In an area that is extremely thin on economic affluence, they soar. Guy Lee strives to open a world of wonder and learning to children. As a volunteer I watch the staff balance a very diverse student base and encourage them to self manage, to seek answers. I feel blessed that my son's educational journey began in a beautiful community of learning like Guy Lee Elementary. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
