Creative Science School

Summary:

Creative Science School is a public elementary school serving 423 students in grades K-8 in Portland, Oregon, which is part of the highly-ranked Portland School District 1J. This school consistently outperforms the district and state in academic proficiency, ranking in the top 30% of Oregon elementary schools.

Creative Science School's academic excellence is evident across multiple metrics. The school has significantly higher percentages of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and Mathematics compared to the district and state averages. It also excels in supporting specialized student groups, with its Special Education students ranking in the top 10% of Oregon elementary schools, and its White and Female students performing well above state and district averages. The school's higher spending per student compared to the district and state may contribute to its success, along with its focus on science and creative learning.

When compared to nearby schools, Creative Science School stands out. It consistently outperforms the academic proficiency of the David Douglas School District 40, which includes lower-performing schools like Mill Park Elementary and West Powellhurst Elementary. This disparity may be linked to socioeconomic factors, as the nearby schools have higher percentages of students from low-income families, which can impact academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Hands on learning, very involved parent community. Great school Close Quote

Open Quote Creative Science School is truly an amazing place for students. The staff and teachers are intelligent and warm. They deeply care about the students. The parents are very involved. There are no volunteer requirements but parent involvement is an essential piece of why this schools works. The program has been around for 30 years and the curriculum is Piaget/Constructivism. The “science” in the school name comes from implementing the scientific method in the classroom. This is not a science thematic school. Our teachers use the Storyline Method to present constructivist theory in a practical form. Learning is built around units and students work together to hypothesize, test, conclude and report. The school also uses the program MindUp; which nurtures optimism and happiness in the classroom, helps eliminate bullying and aggression, increases empathy and compassion, while resolving peer conflicts. My son loves the peace MindUp brings to his day. Close Quote

Open Quote MY SON IS A SEVEN GRADER NOW, HE WAS TWO YEARS BEHIND ON MATH SO HAVE TO PAY FOR TUTORING, SO THAT HE WILL BE AT GRADE LEVEL. I DON'T FEEL LIKE THIS SCHOOL IS TEACHING THE RIGHT SUBJECTS AND I'M SURE I AM NOT THE ONLY PARENT THAT THINK THAT. I WILL TRANSFER MY SON TO DEFERENCE SCHOOL ALONG WITH SOME OTHER PARENTS. DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE BRINGING YOUR KIDS TO THIS SCHOOL. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
