Vernon Elementary School

Summary:

Vernon Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 555 students in grades PK-8 in Portland, Oregon. As part of the Portland School District 1J, which is ranked 17 out of 140 districts in the state, Vernon Elementary has seen significant improvements in its academic performance and statewide ranking in recent years.

One of the key strengths of Vernon Elementary is its consistent academic performance, with students outperforming the district and state averages in standardized tests across multiple grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, 66.1% of 3rd graders at Vernon were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 56.3% for the district and 39% for the state. The school also excels in supporting the academic achievement of diverse student subgroups, ranking highly for White, Hispanic, and Special Education students compared to other Oregon elementary schools.

Despite having a relatively high percentage of students from low-income families, Vernon Elementary has been able to maintain its strong academic performance, suggesting effective strategies for supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds. While the school outperforms many nearby schools in the Portland School District 1J, it still lags behind some of the highest-performing schools in the area, such as Alameda Elementary and Sabin Elementary. Nevertheless, Vernon Elementary's consistent improvement over the past decade, from a 1-star to a 4-star school, is a testament to the school's commitment to continuous progress and effective teaching practices.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote When I used to go to this school as a child I used to get picked on all the time always by the same 3 girls who happened to be sisters. I would get beat up and chocked right outside the school. My mother would have many meetings with the principal and not once was something done. Then the day that I finally slapped a girl, I got put on a sticker chart by the principal. I personally am not racist, I love everyone the same. However when I went to this school it was mostly black students. I was white. The girls who picked on me were black and so was the principal, and I honestly think it had to do with racism on their part and that's why nothing was ever done for me. I went to that school all the way from pre k to 5th grade and nothing was ever done.
Also I did not have the perfect mother growing up and I would miss SO MUCH school and never did they question my mother about why I wasn't going to school. When I did go to school I would have holes in my clothes and not once did anyone try to help me. I hated this school so much that I would fake being sick so I wouldn't have to go. It's been about 10 years since I graduated from this school so things very well could have changed since then, but there's also a possibility they haven't. I will never send my children there regardless. Just because of the bad experience I had. Good luck!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
