George Middle School

Summary:

George Middle School is a public middle school located in Portland, Oregon, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 387 students. The school is part of the Portland School District 1J, which is ranked 17 out of 140 districts in Oregon and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the district's strong performance, George Middle School consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Oregon middle schools, with significantly lower academic achievement compared to the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 16.5% of 6th graders, 21.4% of 7th graders, and 19.4% of 8th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the district averages of 54.3%, 56.7%, and 53.2%, respectively. The school's performance in mathematics is even lower, with only 13% of 6th graders, 13.2% of 7th graders, and 6.7% of 8th graders proficient or better, compared to the district averages of 44.4%, 46.9%, and 40.6%.

The school's underperformance is particularly pronounced for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and Multi-racial students, who rank in the bottom 10-20% of Oregon middle schools in these categories. Additionally, the school's performance for Gifted and Talented students is also relatively low, ranking in the bottom 20% of Oregon middle schools. While the school has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (64.34% receiving free or reduced-price lunch) and a relatively low student-teacher ratio (13.3 students per teacher), these factors do not appear to be the primary drivers of the school's underperformance, as nearby schools within the Portland School District 1J and the neighboring Beaverton School District 48J consistently outperform George Middle School on academic measures.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have had 3 kids attend this middle school. School bullying and violence are not uncommon. I currently have a 6th grader who within the first 2 weeks has been assaulted. During this initial altercation, which stemmed from my son not being allowed to be in an area they deemed as theirs, was punched in the nose and now has become a target for a group of kids. The administration seems uninterested or unwilling to address any of it and this is why the middle school has the reputation it does. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
