Riverside Junior/Senior High School

Summary:

Riverside Junior/Senior High School is a public school serving grades 7-12 in Boardman, Oregon, with a total enrollment of 496 students. The school is part of the Morrow School District 1, which is ranked 85 out of 140 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riverside Junior/Senior High School has consistently underperformed compared to the state average in OSAS (Oregon Statewide Assessment System) test scores for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science across different grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 11th-grade proficiency rates were 42.2% in ELA, 12.2% in Math, and 30% in Science, compared to the state averages of 45.2%, 20%, and 32%, respectively. The school's performance has been declining over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 134 out of 301 high schools in 2013-2014 to 166 out of 268 high schools in 2023-2024. While Hermiston High School in the neighboring Hermiston School District 8 has performed better, Umatilla High School in the Umatilla School District 6R has even lower academic performance than Riverside.

Riverside Junior/Senior High School's performance varies across different student subgroups. Hispanic students have performed relatively better, ranking 51 out of 132 high schools in Oregon in the 2023-2024 school year, while White students have had a more mixed performance, ranking 110 out of 244 high schools in 2023-2024 but dropping to 7 out of 228 high schools in 2021-2022. Special education students have performed poorly, ranking 67 out of 69 high schools in 2023-2024. The school's high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 68.35% in the 2022-2023 school year, and the relatively high spending per student of $16,813 in the 2021-2022 school year, suggest that socioeconomic factors may be playing a role in the school's performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is a great place for students. The teachers there are able to take students who are high poverty and limited english and help them achieve on level with other schools in the state that don't have half the issues that they have to deal with daily. They should be ranked higher than 3 stars. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
