Roosevelt Elementary School

Summary:

Roosevelt Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Medford, Oregon, serving 370 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Medford School District 549C, which is ranked 66 out of 140 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending of $18,442 in the 2021-2022 school year, Roosevelt Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Oregon elementary schools over the past 10 years, with proficiency rates on state assessments (OSAS) generally below the district and state averages in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. For example, in 2023-2024, only 29.2% of 3rd graders, 28% of 4th graders, and 48.5% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the district averages of 38.3%, 38%, and 47.7%, respectively. The school's diverse student population, with 69.73% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, may contribute to these academic challenges.

Interestingly, Roosevelt Elementary's Hispanic students consistently outperform their White counterparts on state assessments, ranking in the top 50% of Oregon elementary schools for this subgroup. However, the school's male students and special education students tend to perform below the state and district averages. When compared to nearby schools in the Medford School District, Roosevelt Elementary generally underperforms, with Jefferson Elementary and Hoover Elementary having higher proficiency rates on state assessments. These disparities suggest that targeted interventions and support may be needed to address the unique challenges facing Roosevelt Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Very little over sight at this school when children are on the play ground or other common areas. Children must line up on lines painted on black top and await their teachers before going inside the building before school, there is no cover and the children are subjected to the elements while waiting. The principle is unwilling to take action on problems and is not trustworthy. The environment at this campus is one of self preservation of the staff over what is best for the students. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
