McCornack Elementary School

Summary:

McCornack Elementary School is a public elementary school in Eugene, Oregon, serving 340 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Eugene School District 4J, which is ranked 20 out of 140 districts in the state.

While McCornack Elementary has experienced fluctuations in its statewide ranking, the school faces challenges in student academic performance, particularly in the upper grades and for certain student subgroups. Proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, only 31.7% of 5th-grade students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 55.7% in the district and 46.9% statewide. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic students and those from low-income families performing relatively poorly.

Interestingly, McCornack Elementary's performance is lower than nearby schools within the Eugene School District 4J, such as Village School, River Road/Elementary Camino del Rio Elementary School, and Willagillespie Elementary School, which have higher proficiency rates and statewide rankings. However, McCornack's performance is better than some schools outside the district, such as Malabon Elementary School and Fairfield Elementary School, which are part of the Bethel School District 52.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have one child who has left McCornack to go to middle school and one child who still attends. The school's test rankings have been in a slide since they lost their principle after the 08 school year. The staff attitude declined after he left, my childs attitude toward school changed as well as the new principle replaced teachers and brought in new priorities and curriculum. The decline in education is very noticeable as a parent. My child who still attends McCornack is getting an A equivalent in the fast math class as a 5th grader and can barely perform basic addition and multiplication. McCornack is fine as long as you plan on hiring a tutor to supplement your child's education. Given a do-over I would choose another elementary school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
