Summary:

Shasta Middle School is a public middle school located in Eugene, Oregon, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 392 students. The school is part of the Bethel School District 52, which is ranked 117 out of 140 districts in Oregon and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Shasta Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Oregon middle schools over the past several years, with a current ranking of 311 out of 371 schools and a 1-star rating.

Shasta Middle School's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better in OSAS (Oregon Statewide Assessment System) tests, is significantly lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 30.8% of 6th-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 40.7% and the district average of 31%. The school's performance in mathematics is particularly concerning, with only 13.2% of 6th-graders, 18.5% of 7th-graders, and 13.4% of 8th-graders achieving proficiency or better. Additionally, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with White and Multi-racial students performing particularly poorly compared to their peers.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Cascade Middle School in the same district and Spencer Butte Middle School in the Eugene School District 4J, Shasta Middle School consistently underperforms. Spencer Butte Middle School, for example, ranks significantly higher (106 out of 371 Oregon middle schools) and has much higher academic proficiency rates across all subject areas. The high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds at Shasta Middle School, as well as the overall challenges faced by the Bethel School District 52, may be contributing factors to the school's academic struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The administration has no idea what they are doing. Everytime I call them about an issue they question me and act like I am in the wrong. I am the parent it should be my decision what name my student is called, what clubs he is allowed to be part of, and what conversations I believe to be appropriate for him to be apart of. The staff of this school is more worried about being p.c. then the concerns of the parents. I feel like my students self awareness of who he is is being altered by a staff that is too overly expressive about "what all he could be". I agree we should all have the right to be who we feel we are (gender, sexual preference, etc.) but middle school age is confusing enough without all the extra input from outside sources. I feel like this school will not listen to me as a parent and I am tried of hearing "I understand but we have to follow the wishes of the student". Excuse me?! When did my child become your decision? I'm done trying to talk to these people, I'm moving to put my student in 4J where education is about education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
