William Walker Elementary School

Summary:

William Walker Elementary School is a public elementary school in Portland, Oregon, serving 534 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Beaverton School District 48J.

Despite being located in the same district as several high-performing elementary schools like West Tualatin View, Cedar Mill, and Ridgewood, William Walker Elementary has consistently underperformed in standardized test scores for English Language Arts and Mathematics, with only 7.8% of 3rd graders, 18.7% of 4th graders, and 38.9% of 5th graders reaching proficiency, compared to the district's 50.9%, 57.7%, and 62% respectively. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Special Education students ranking in the bottom 25% of Oregon elementary schools in their respective subgroups.

Despite having a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (68.16%) and a relatively high spending per student ($20,686), William Walker Elementary has not been able to translate these resources into better academic outcomes for its students. The school's consistent 1-star rating from SchoolDigger and its proximity to high-performing schools in the district raise concerns about the school's ability to provide a high-quality education to all its students, particularly its underperforming subgroups, and the need for a comprehensive review of its strategies and interventions to address these issues.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I believe that William Walker gets a really bad rap on this and so many other school ranking websites. I understand that the numbers and rankings are based on many things - not least of which are overall test scores. But, being a Title 1 school and having such a majority of students that are Hispanic puts it at a distinct disadvantage in regards to those test scores. English is a second language to many if not most of these students and they are the translators for their parents. Getting help and guidance at home for these students is a lot more difficult. This reflects poorly on the scores. The teachers are amazing at this school. That being said, my daughter attended WW and had an amazing experience and education. I think it all depends on the needs of the child. My daughter is a very good student and certainly near the top of her class. You might think she would have been bored and not challenged in a school such as this - but that is much to the contrary. She received differentiated learning in Math, Science, and English with other students of higher caliber. My son went to a different elementary school that is not Title 1 and has received a rather generic education in comparison. We have had to do more to challenge him at home with our own guidance. So, if your child is in need of ESL specific help, WW is the place to get it. If you child is English speaking and a good student - this is also your place. Don't let the school level test scores fool you. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
