TRAILS Outdoor School

Summary:

TRAILS Outdoor School is a public elementary school serving 149 students in grades K-8 in Ashland, Oregon, which is part of the highly-ranked Ashland School District 5.

This unique school stands out for its strong academic performance, with students consistently scoring well above state and district averages in English Language Arts and Mathematics. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 77.8% of 6th graders and 65.4% of 7th graders at TRAILS Outdoor School were proficient or better in ELA, compared to state averages of just 40.7% and 43.2%. The school also serves a significant population of low-income students, with 40.94% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, yet these students have performed exceptionally well, ranking 64th out of 703 Oregon elementary schools in ELA proficiency in 2021-2022. This suggests TRAILS Outdoor School is effectively addressing the needs of diverse learners and providing equitable educational opportunities.

The school's focus on outdoor and experiential learning is likely a key factor in its strong academic performance, which outpaces many nearby elementary schools in the Ashland and Medford areas. This unique approach could serve as a model for other schools looking to incorporate more hands-on, nature-based learning into their curricula.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote It's a great school for younger kids, but once your child gets into the older grades, I recommend going to the middle school instead. Marcia, the only teacher of the 7,8th grade is not capable of teaching all the subjects at that level. She picks favorites and contributes to the bullying that happens in her class by calling names and making fun of students. If she likes your kid, the will most likely do well. But, every year, there are a few she doesn't like and it is always a problem with very little help from the administration. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
