Del City Elementary School

Summary:

Del City Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 523 students in grades PK-5 in the Midwest City-Del City school district in Oklahoma. The school has a diverse student population, with 29.64% White, 26.58% African American, and 24.67% Hispanic students.

Despite its diverse student body, Del City Elementary consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in the state, with only 33% of 3rd graders proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 40% for the district and 51% for the state. The school's academic performance has declined over the years, and it currently ranks 386 out of 389 Oklahoma elementary schools, with 0 out of 5 SchoolDigger stars. This underperformance is evident across grade levels and subject areas, with the school lagging behind nearby Cleveland Bailey Elementary, Country Estates Elementary, and other Midwest City-Del City schools.

One potential contributing factor to Del City Elementary's academic challenges is the high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 48.57% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, higher than the nearby schools in the district. The school's student-teacher ratio has also fluctuated in recent years, ranging from 10.7 to 17.4, which may impact the school's ability to provide individualized attention and support to its students. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach to improve teaching and learning, provide targeted interventions, and address the needs of the school's high-poverty population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the school where a first grade teacher's negligence was responsible for a 6 or 7 year old Native student being bullied to the extent that the bullies slashed off the boy's hair while the teacher was in the classroom doing "me time" on her computer. And not only was no action taken on it, she's still employed there! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
