Sheridan Middle School

Summary:

Sheridan Middle School is a public middle school located in Thornville, Ohio, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 565. The school is part of the Northern Local School District, which is ranked 243 out of 839 districts in Ohio and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sheridan Middle School consistently performs above the state average in Ohio State Tests across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 77.9% of 8th-grade students were proficient or better in Science, compared to the state average of 62.1%. The school's gifted and talented students have also consistently ranked among the top schools in Ohio, with a ranking of 8 out of 241 Ohio middle schools in the 2021-2022 school year. However, the school's performance for special education and low socioeconomic status students is relatively lower compared to other student groups.

While Sheridan Middle School generally outperforms nearby schools like Heritage Middle School and Crooksville Middle School in academic performance, some nearby schools, like Heath Middle School, also demonstrate strong academic results. The school's relatively high percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients (40.18% in 2022-2023) suggests that the school serves a population with lower socioeconomic status, which may impact academic performance. Additionally, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 7.5% in the 2019-2020 school year to 24.8% in the 2022-2023 school year, which is an area of concern that the school should address.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Sheridan Middle School is a excellent choice of schools in Ohio. Teachers have plenty of time for students academically. Students are kept under a strict rule system located in their agenda. But one thing I find interesting about SMS is the lack of bullying at the school. I hardly ever see any bullying at this school. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
