Hiawatha Elementary School

Summary:

Hiawatha Elementary School is a public elementary school serving around 345 students in grades K-6 in Toledo, Ohio. It is part of the Washington Local School District, which is ranked 553 out of 839 districts in Ohio and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hiawatha Elementary's test scores are generally on par with or slightly below the district and state averages, but the school's performance is better than some of the other nearby schools in the Toledo City district. However, the school has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 10.7% in 2019-2020 to 27.0% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average and some of the nearby schools. Additionally, Hiawatha has a relatively high percentage of students (49.28%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

While Hiawatha's performance is generally better than some of the lower-performing schools in the Toledo City district, it lags behind the higher-performing schools in the Washington Local district, such as McGregor Elementary and Meadowvale Elementary. Addressing the issues of chronic absenteeism and supporting the needs of the school's socioeconomically disadvantaged student population could be crucial for Hiawatha to improve its performance and provide a better educational experience for its students.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
