Carey Elementary School

Summary:

Carey Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 369 students in grades PK-5 in Carey, Ohio, which is part of the Carey Exempted Village Schools district. The school stands out for its strong academic performance, particularly in science and mathematics, where it consistently outperforms the state average on Ohio State Tests. For example, in 2023-2024, 83% of 5th graders were proficient or better in Science, compared to the state average of 64%.

However, Carey Elementary School faces some challenges, including a higher chronic absenteeism rate ranging from 12.1% to 13.9% in recent years, which is higher than nearby schools like Hopewell-Loudon Local Elementary School and Arcadia Elementary School. The school also has a significant percentage of students (43.36% in 2022-2023) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-income families compared to the state average.

Carey Elementary School's demographic makeup is also noteworthy, with a significantly higher percentage of white students (92.14% in 2022-2023) compared to the state average and nearby schools. This is in contrast to some of the more diverse student populations in the Upper Sandusky Exempted Village and Riverdale Local districts. Despite these differences, Carey Elementary School's overall performance remains strong, with a low student-teacher ratio and consistent academic achievement, making it a compelling option for families in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The staff at the school are less concerned about the educational needs, provisions, and safety of the students than they are the village gossip. My child witnessed her teacher and the teachers aid discussing other students family financial situations in front of the class and when my child would interject she was told to mind her own business.
My child has been bullied by both students and teachers with our complaints being swept under the rug. Other teachers have come forward and informed us they have witnessed the staff bullying and favoritism, but out of fear of losing their job or being looked over for a position that may be opening they refused to stand up for what was right.
A child in Kindergarten repeatedly wet her pants in school because her teacher refused to allow her to go to the bathroom; her parents were told she was pretending to have to go to the bathroom because other students needed to go ( this child has a serious urinary tract issue that they have been trying to treat and control).
My daughter was called names by her teacher in front of her class and most days came home in tears. When we contacted administration about the issue it was swept under the rug and our child was bullied even more by her teachers. The principal falsely led us to believe that there was nothing we could do as far as help policy to change until the following year. We found out later, she had lied and we could attend meetings weekly to help evoke change. At one point in the year her teachers aid told her that if she were to tell her parents anything she would get into trouble when she returned back to school.
My child would constantly bring home class work that was incorrect and never checked over by a teacher to teach her any different. Flyers or pamphlets sent home were littered with typos and misspellings.
This school should either clean house or be shut down. My child will not be attending this district ever again. Carey has failed many before us and will only continue to set others up for failure unless higher standards are demanded by the village in way of change and improvement, which has nothing to do with building a new school; the excuse one usually gets for why the educators lack the ability to do their jobs. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
