Ohio Avenue Elementary School

Summary:

Ohio Avenue Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 241 students in grades PK-5 in the Columbus City Schools District in Columbus, Ohio.

The school has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Ohio, with a 0 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger in the 2023-2024 school year. This is reflected in the school's test scores, which are significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. Ohio Avenue Elementary School has also struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates, reaching as high as 86.3% in the 2020-2021 school year, more than double the state average. The school serves a student population that is predominantly from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, which likely contributes to the academic challenges.

Nearby schools in the Columbus City Schools District, such as Stewart Alternative Elementary School, Fairwood Alternative Elementary School, and Livingston Elementary School, also struggle with low academic performance and high chronic absenteeism rates, suggesting systemic challenges within the district. Addressing these challenges will likely require a multifaceted approach that addresses not only academic performance but also factors such as student and family support, community engagement, and resource allocation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is truly a hidden treasure and I urge parents to really consider this school for the K-12 students. The new principal is in touch with the community and with the determination of the teachers is pulling Ohio Ave ES to greater heights. This neighborhood has had an insurgence of resources so for those who are investing in Old Towne East and the Old Oaks are of Columbus....invest in the schools also. Together we can bring about a positive change for everyone....students, faculty ,staff and the community. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
