Riverside School

Summary:

Riverside School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Cleveland Municipal District, with a student population of 438 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school consistently outperforms the district and the state of Ohio in academic proficiency, with 51.3% of 5th graders proficient or better in Science, compared to 24% for the district and 64% for the state. Riverside School's performance for certain student subgroups, such as African American students, English Language Learners, and Special Education students, is also noteworthy, ranking significantly higher than the overall school ranking.

However, Riverside School has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 12.0% in 2019-2020 to 30.6% in 2022-2023, which is an area the school should focus on improving. The school generally outperforms the other public schools in the immediate vicinity, such as Wilbur Wright School, Mary Church Terrell, and Newton D Baker School, which all have lower academic proficiency rates and higher chronic absenteeism.

Despite serving a relatively diverse student population with a significant percentage of low-income and special education students, Riverside School is able to achieve strong academic results, suggesting effective teaching and support strategies. However, the school's statewide ranking has gradually declined over the past decade, from 872 out of 1,687 Ohio elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 926 out of 1,577 in 2023-2024, which, coupled with the increasing chronic absenteeism, warrants further investigation and targeted interventions to address the underlying issues.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is unbearably sad. I hope you heed my warning. It's a beautiful new school in the middle of a quiet neighborhood which is quite appealing but the teachers, administration, and fellow parents are a complete joke.

My son is in the advanced class and his teacher sends home a weekly letter that, since week 1, is completely riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. It makes me cringe. She gives at least an hour of homework every night which ranges nonsensically from 4+4 to long division. It's clearly just printed from some random internet page. She has also instructed these young minds that zero is in fact an even number. Are you serious?! I received a call home from the principal that my son was in an "altercation" . It consisted of him (8 years old) going to the bathroom and being punched in the stomach by a 13 year old! The kid was a "problem child" just roaming the hallways I guess. I was happy they contacted me and they seemed to take good care of my son after the incident, but when I went in for conferences and asked the teacher SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. Then clearly realized she had no idea and said "yes the kids use the restroom". Are you joking me?

I've twice came and picked my son up in the car line and there were no teachers or anything. kindergartners and 1st graders just wandering through traffic. Parent's flying up the wrong side of the street to try and pick their kid up faster. I asked my son where the teachers were and he said they were just talking inside and didn't come out today.

Just go to the website for this school. It's a generic webpage generated by the garbage CMSD. Call the number listed. It doesn't even work. Go to the calendar of events. You can't see anything that's on there and there's no times listed for early release days. Guess you just have to know. There is zero communication to parents. You had better be ready to go into the school and pick up flyers. If you do go in, expect to be confronted by an extremely rude office assistant. Truly I don't blame her. You can't expect ONE SINGLE PERSON to handle every person and phone call that comes in. Just one. For a K-8 school.

I thought it looked ok and people seemed nice. I feel regretful my child wasted a year of his life here. Parents who think this school is nice have clearly not seen what a nice school is like. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
