Ohio Digital Learning School

Summary:

The Ohio Digital Learning School is a public charter virtual high school located in Maumee, Ohio, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 939 students. The school is part of the Penta Career Center - District, which is ranked 769 out of 839 districts in Ohio and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The Ohio Digital Learning School has struggled to provide a high-quality education to its students. The school has a higher percentage of White (69.44%) and African American (18.96%) students compared to the state average, with lower percentages of Hispanic (10.22%) and Asian (0.44%) students. Its 4-year graduation rate is only 44.8%, significantly lower than the state average. The school also has high rates of chronic absenteeism, reaching 47.7% in the 2019-2020 school year, much higher than the state average. Academically, the school's proficiency rates on Ohio state tests are significantly lower than the state average across all subject areas, with particularly low performance in Geometry (2.5% proficient) and Algebra I (7.4% proficient). The school has a high student-teacher ratio of 40.3, much higher than the nearby Penta Career Center - on campus, which has a ratio of 13.1.

The Ohio Digital Learning School's struggles are particularly pronounced for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students, who rank in the bottom 25% of Ohio high schools in these categories. The school's performance has generally declined over the past few years, with lower proficiency rates and graduation rates, as well as higher chronic absenteeism rates. The nearby Penta Career Center, a public high school, has a much more diverse student population, lower student-teacher ratio, and higher percentage of free/reduced-price lunch recipients, suggesting that the Ohio Digital Learning School may be serving a more disadvantaged student population. These challenges highlight the difficulties that virtual schools can face in providing a high-quality education, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is awful. I get no help from the help support when I call them asking about my diploma. They say they'll transfer me to an administrator to help with my situation and all they ever do is send me back to the main menu. They're compeletly rude and unhelpful. Would not recommend this school based off how I was treated. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
