Greater Ohio Virtual School

Summary:

Greater Ohio Virtual School is a public charter high school serving grades 7-12 in Lebanon, Ohio, with a total enrollment of 628 students as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school's racial makeup is predominantly White (84.55%), with smaller percentages of Hispanic (5.57%), African American (3.03%), and other racial groups.

Despite being a public school, Greater Ohio Virtual School has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Ohio high schools, ranking between 654 and 732 out of 756 to 867 high schools over the past 15 years, and has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the majority of this period. The school's four-year graduation rate has been steadily declining, from 56.8% in 2023-2024 to just 29.2% in 2019-2020, which is significantly lower than the state average. Additionally, Greater Ohio Virtual School students consistently score well below the state average on Ohio State Tests across various subjects and grade levels, with proficiency rates ranging from 3.9% in Geometry to 60.6% in American History, compared to state averages of 39.8% and 68.5%, respectively. The school's student-teacher ratio has also increased from 20:1 in 2020-2021 to 33.1:1 in 2022-2023, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools, such as WCCC @ Atrium, Butler Technical Natural Science Center, and Warren County Career Center.

The analysis of Greater Ohio Virtual School reveals a concerning trend of declining academic performance and poor student outcomes compared to both state and local standards. The school's consistently low statewide ranking, declining graduation rates, and underperformance on state assessments across various subject areas and student subgroups suggest that the school may be facing significant challenges in providing a quality education to its students. Further investigation and targeted interventions may be necessary to address these issues and improve the school's performance, which appears to be underperforming compared to the nearby Warren County Vocational School and Butler Technology & Career Development Schools districts.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote From a parents point of view. I have 2 children in Govs and I could not be happier. I have done traditional homeschooling, K12, and Connections Academy and Govs is my favorite curriculum and program. Both of my children are on an IEP and my oldest needed their curriculum altered other programs would not work with him. But Govs not only works with my children's needs but they also provide needed therapies like Speech, OT, etc. and tutors. I could not be more pleased with this program. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
