Family School 32

Summary:

Family School 32 is a public magnet elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Yonkers, NY, with 567 students. The school faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom half of New York elementary schools and underperforming state and district averages, particularly in math and for its Hispanic and English Language Learner student subgroups.

Despite receiving higher per-student funding ($18,679 in 2022-2023) compared to the Yonkers City School District average, Family School 32's academic performance does not seem to reflect this additional investment. The school's 3rd grade proficiency rates in 2023-2024 were just 34.55% in ELA and 47.27% in math, lagging the state averages of 42.6% and 53.93%, respectively. Its 5th and 8th grade math proficiency rates were particularly low at 22.03% and 17.14%.

While Family School 32's performance is generally on par with other Yonkers district schools, there are a few nearby exceptions, such as Casimir Pulaski School and Patricia A Dichiaro School, which consistently rank in the top half of New York schools and outperform Family School 32 across multiple metrics. This suggests that there may be opportunities for Family School 32 to learn from the practices of these higher-performing local schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school sucks! The teachers don’t care about students and students are being called Niggers behind there backs! When you approach the teacher and ask what did you say? They reply “ OH NOTHING!” As if if you did not hear anything! This school is a disgrace to the community. I would not send your kids here.. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
