Troy High School

Summary:

Troy High School is a public high school located in Troy, NY, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,153 students. It is part of the Troy City School District, which is ranked 650 out of 865 school districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Troy High School faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, graduation and dropout rates, and socioeconomic factors. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York high schools, with mixed performance on Regents exams and declining proficiency rates in recent years. Its four-year graduation rate of 84-85% is slightly below the state average, and its dropout rate of 7-10% is higher than the state average. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with around 60% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and this is reflected in the school's lower performance for these students compared to their peers.

Interestingly, nearby schools like Averill Park High School, Columbia High School, and Shaker High School generally outperform Troy High School on academic measures, with higher Regents proficiency rates, graduation rates, and lower dropout and chronic absenteeism rates. These nearby schools also serve a lower percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, which may contribute to their stronger academic performance. Troy High School's declining performance and significant achievement gaps for subgroups suggest that the school needs to implement targeted interventions and strategies to improve outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Troy has a diverse population and does an amazing job at educating all children. They continue to offer programs taylored to children's needs with many AP courses, 4 foriegn language offerings and an outstanding music department. While the scores for the schools do not currently reflect the outstanding education that can be received by committed students, Troy is diligently working toward the future to ensure that all the children will succeed to their fullest potential. If you have a student with a good
foundation at home they are sure to thrive in Troy schools. Many Troy students graduate with over 20 college credits because of the programs that are offered within the school through HVCC & RPI. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
