Port Chester Middle School

Summary:

Port Chester Middle School is a public middle school serving 971 students in grades 6-8 in the Port Chester-Rye Union Free School District in Port Chester, New York. Despite spending significantly more per student than the state average, the school consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of New York middle schools and struggles to serve its diverse student population effectively.

Academically, Port Chester Middle School performs well below the state and district averages on standardized assessments, with its rankings falling between 1010-1163 out of around 1500 middle schools in New York over the past 5 years. The school also struggles to support its subgroups, ranking in the bottom half of the state for most student demographics, including female, male, Asian, African American, Hispanic, white, English language learners, special education, and economically disadvantaged students. This stark contrast is evident when comparing Port Chester Middle School to nearby high-performing schools like Eastchester Middle School, Hommocks School, and Rye Middle School, which consistently rank in the top 10-20% of New York middle schools.

Despite the high per-student spending and relatively small class sizes, Port Chester Middle School has struggled to improve its academic performance over the past 5-10 years. This suggests that factors beyond just funding, such as curriculum, teaching quality, and school leadership, need to be examined and addressed to help the school better support its diverse student population and improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I help two students with reading. Both have told me that final exams are this week BUT they’re told they need not study because the tests would be very easy with multiple guess answers! Everyone is guaranteed to get a passing grade, where they will then enter the PCHS with the same low bar for achievement. This school basically provides babysitting services for Middle schoolers. Requirements to learn and achieve are non existent. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
