Otselic Valley Central School

Summary:

Otselic Valley Central School is an alternative public school serving around 300 students in grades PK-12 in the rural town of South Otselic, New York. The nearest comparable school is the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES, which is about 14 miles away.

Despite having relatively high graduation rates, ranging from 84.3% to 90.4% in recent years, Otselic Valley Central School has had mixed performance on state assessments, with some grade levels and subjects scoring below the state average. The school also has a concerning high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 34.1% to 54.0% in recent years, which may be contributing to the lower academic performance in some areas. Additionally, the school has had relatively high spending per student, ranging from $16,165 to $39,501 over the past few years, and a low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.3 to 12.1 in recent years.

Compared to the state average, Otselic Valley Central School District has had low dropout rates, with 0% reported in some years, which is significantly better than the state average. However, the school's high chronic absenteeism rates and mixed academic performance suggest that the district may need to evaluate the effectiveness of its resource allocation and explore ways to improve student outcomes, particularly in areas where the school is underperforming compared to the state average.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As if this district wasnt bad enough to begin with if you had to deal with the new leadership they brought in you would move like we intend to !! Stay away is all I have to say !! Dont bother trying to complain about the way you student is being treated by a teacher! It doesnt matter if your child has never gotten in any trouble ever . If you have a complaint they automaticly blame your child. Dont bother raisinig your hand in class for help if your a student!!! you wont get it if your in 6th grade math ! your on your own!! Even if you have a 504 plan. They say open door policy, thats only if you have nothing to say!! Complaints are not heard ,as soon as you try to voice your opinion or ?s a teacher they threaten to stop the meeting!!Im sad they replaced the principal, I never thought I would miss the old one .But its only the 3rd week of school with this new one and I do. I bet the dropout rate this yr will be very high ,its sad really !!If you have a choice dont move into this district!!! I will have my kids out of here by the holidays no matter what it takes!!! I feel sorry for the few good teachers that are there,It saddens me that they have to deal with such garbage at the helm. This is the first time in 25 yrs of putting children threw school that Im completely discusted with a district. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
