Mineola Middle School

Summary:

Mineola Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 5-7 in the Mineola Union Free School District, with 636 students located in Mineola, NY. The school has consistently ranked in the top 20-30% of New York middle schools over the past decade, with a current statewide ranking of 476 out of 1,504 middle schools (top 32%).

Mineola Middle School students consistently outperform the state average on New York State Assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, with 47-66% of students scoring proficient or better, compared to the state averages of 43-57%. The school's performance is particularly strong for White and Asian students, who rank in the top 30-40% and top 15-25% of New York middle schools respectively. However, the school's Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) students perform below the state average, ranking in the bottom 40-50% of New York middle schools. Mineola Middle School spends around $21,000-$22,000 per student, which is higher than the state average and many of the nearby schools, such as Westbury Middle School, Lawrence Road Middle School, and Alverta B Gray Schultz Middle School, all of which are ranked in the bottom 20% of New York middle schools.

Mineola Middle School's higher spending per student and lower student-teacher ratio of 11-12 students per teacher may be contributing factors to its strong academic performance. However, the school should focus on addressing the performance gaps among its student subgroups, particularly Hispanic and ELL students, to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed. Overall, Mineola Middle School is a strong-performing middle school that has consistently delivered high-quality education to its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Both of my kids had a wonderful experience at Mineola Middle. The teachers care and reach out to us regularly if they feel something is wrong. Both of my kids are in the Accelerated and Gifted Program (AGP) at the school and are being pushed to their potential. My older son will graduate this year and will go on the HS in Mineola. He will be taking his first regents exam this year before entering HS. The district also fund summer and online programs for the kids, keeping their minds engaged even throughout the pandemic. They have a strong science program and participate in National competitions, like Rube Goldberg. Overall, a wonderful experience. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
