La Fayette Junior-Senior High School

Summary:

La Fayette Junior-Senior High School is a public high school serving grades 7-12 in the Lafayette Central School District in La Fayette, NY, with 324 students. The school's performance has been mixed in recent years, with fluctuations in its statewide ranking and rating.

While the school performs relatively well in some academic areas like Algebra II, English Language Arts, and Global History, it struggles in others like 8th grade Math and Science. Notably, the school spends significantly more per student ($17,676 to $23,047) compared to the state average, yet its performance lags in many areas. This suggests the school may need to re-evaluate how it allocates its resources to drive better student outcomes. Additionally, the school faces challenges in supporting its most vulnerable student populations, including Native American, special education, and low-income students, with these groups performing below their peers statewide.

Compared to neighboring high schools like Westhill High School, Tully Junior-Senior High School, and Jamesville-Dewitt High School, which generally outperform La Fayette on key metrics like test scores, graduation rates, and statewide rankings, La Fayette's performance lags behind. These neighboring schools serve more affluent communities and have lower rates of poverty and special education needs, which likely contributes to their stronger academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have lived the better part of my life in Lafayette and I wish this were not the case, but the school district in Lafayette is in complete disarray. Test scores are horrendous, programs are in decline, and even athletics have been mismanaged to the point of ridiculousness. Academic performance is discouraged and the numbers prove it. Performance is severely lagging behind neighboring schools. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
