As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My children were sent to Steele School after Milburn was closed down. We moved to the area specifically because we wanted our children to start elementary school at Milburn, although we assumed Steele wouldn't be so bad because many of our neighbors had gone there when they were children. Unfortunately, that is simply not the case. Ms. Presti (the Principal) seems to be more concerned with the "school and teachers" than with the actual students. I attended the orientation meeting for the incoming students with many parents and she stated (several times), that having a larger school with more students and teachers proved to be more effective for students than having smaller class sizes (which of course is moronic). We are constantly bombarded with paperwork for donations for the school and "extra" activities when the main goal should be getting the students to truly comprehend this new Core Curriculum. The school is ill prepared for emergencies and in depth teacher/parent meetings are not encouraged. There are a few bright stars at Steele School that are truly wonderful teachers. Other than a select few, the others could use some serious improvement. Our school taxes are through the roof and families are struggling to keep their children in good schools, but the Town of Hempstead continues to shut schools down. If my husband and I had the money, we would enroll them in a private school. I pray that we will be able to put our youngest child into a different elementary school when his time comes. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
