Amagansett School

Summary:

Amagansett School is a small public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in the East Hampton Union Free School District, consistently earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger for its strong academic performance.

Amagansett School stands out for its exceptional academic achievements, with students significantly outperforming the state averages on New York State Assessments in both English Language Arts and Math. For example, in 2022-2023, 61.54% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in ELA compared to the state average of 44.89%, and 71.43% were proficient or better in Math compared to the state average of 53.68%. The school's low student-teacher ratio of 6.3 likely contributes to this success. However, the school has a notably higher percentage of White students (74.4%) compared to the more diverse student populations at nearby schools like Springs School and John M Marshall Elementary School.

Amagansett School also stands out for its high per-student spending, at $50,644 in 2022-2023, which is significantly higher than the state average. This suggests the East Hampton Union Free School District is investing heavily in the school, potentially contributing to its strong academic performance. While the school's consistent 4-star rating is impressive, the district may want to examine the racial disparity in the student population and explore opportunities to share best practices with nearby schools to benefit students across the region.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have grown up in this school, and I have had a wonderful experience. The teachers were so nice, and so were my classmates. The classes are fun and they help you learn well. They are also acceptive, for I have same sex parents and everyone was warm and welcoming to us. I have made it into a high ranking public school, so no, the education is not bad at all. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is the equivilant of a rich private school. The teachers are drastically over paid and under qualified. Most have been teaching the same subject for over 20 years without keeping up with what is new in the teaching world. The Principal gets a free house with the job, which is just plain ridiculous. And when the students join the East Hampton Middle school in 7th Grade they find themselves far behind East Hampton students in Math, Science, and Foreign Language. Amagansett school is small minded with the dilussions that they are a private school. Close Quote

Open Quote I am an alumni of the Amagansett School. Almost 8 years later, I still reminisce on my experiences there. I learned so much, and owe most of my success to my experiences at this quaint school. I still hold the dear friendships so close. I wouldn't trade my 9 years at the Amagansett School for anything. It is an amazing place and I am so blessed and extremely proud to be an alumni. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
