Brilla College Preparatory Charter School

Summary:

Brilla College Preparatory Charter School is an alternative public charter school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades KG-10 with a total enrollment of 754 students. The school has a high percentage of free and reduced lunch recipients, ranging from 67.84% to 94.3% over the past few years, and has seen an increase in per-student spending, going from $16,008 in 2020-2021 to $21,799 in 2022-2023.

One of the key metrics that differentiates Brilla College Preparatory Charter School is its extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.1% to 100% in recent years, which is significantly higher than the state average and the nearby charter schools. While the school's test scores on the New York State Assessments are generally lower than the state averages, especially in English Language Arts, it performs better in Math, with several grade levels exceeding the state proficiency rates. In Regents exams, Brilla College Preparatory Charter School performs better than the state average in English Language Arts and Algebra I, but lags behind in other subjects like Living Environment, Earth Science, and U.S. History and Government.

When compared to nearby charter schools, Brilla College Preparatory Charter School's performance is mixed, as it outperforms some schools in certain subjects and grade levels, but generally lags behind schools like KIPP Bronx Charter School III, Success Academy Charter School-Bronx 3, and Harlem Village Academy East Charter School in both ELA and Math proficiency rates. The extremely high chronic absenteeism rates at Brilla College Preparatory Charter School are likely a significant factor contributing to the school's relatively lower academic performance, and addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism could be a key focus area for the school to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is great, but it caters only to the Catholic Community. The only after school program they offer is a religious program. Numerous requests for an academic and/or secular program have fallen to deaf ears. There are little to no alternative after-school programs in the entire district 7 area, so if you work, good luck finding childcare that will meet the needs of their schedule. The school hours are 7:45-4:00 pm and Fridays are 7:45-1:00 pm (this is the day which makes it most difficult to find an alternate program). They offer a secular program on Friday, but it doesn't address the academic needs of the students. In addition, there is a serious problem with behavior management, which has gotten progressively worse over time. The state scores have probably gone down because of the constant disruptions in the classrooms by some students. This may be due to the fact that they have inexperienced teachers. They also have classroom assistants who also work in the religious after school program, but they have little to no effect on resolving behavior problems. This often hinders the learning process because they don't know how to keep the students under control. In their defense, it is also the parent's responsibility to address issues with their child, unfortunately, not all parents are doing their part. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
